Oil and insulation testing
On this page:
Powerlink’s laboratory provides a range of services for testing oil and insulation used in electrical power transformers.
Our staff are experienced, qualified chemists and scientists supported by professional staff with excellent knowledge of transformer diagnostics.
Once the sample has been tested, clients can access detailed current and historical reports to help monitor and maintain their transformers. We have used database benchmarking for more than 25 years to develop and enhance the condition assessment of oil-filled cables, power and instrument transformers.
Our clients are located across the Asia-Pacific region including Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.
We offer a range of general transformer oil and insulation tests, including:
- dissolved gas analysis
- moisture content
- dielectric breakdown
- dielectric dissipation factor (DDF) and D.C. resistivity
- acidity (neutralisation value)
- furans
- interfacial tension (IFT)
- antioxidant (DBPC, DBDS, etc.) concentration
- passivator (Irgamet39, BTA, etc.) concentration
- degree of polymerisation of paper (DPv)
- PCB contamination (solids, liquids, surfaces)
- particle count and profile
- viscosity
- density
- flash point
- pour point.
We also provide specialised tests such as:
- quality of SF6 gas in HV plant and cylinders
- insulating fluid infrared spectral analysis
- oil oxidation stability testing
- corrosive sulphur
- carbon typing.
Our other services include:
- Database benchmarking for condition assessment of power transformers, tap changers and instrument transformers.
- Transformer remaining life assessment.
- Forensic analysis of transformer and other high voltage plant insulation failures.
- Reliability and contingency analysis for network transformers.
- Training on oil and SF6 sampling, testing and plant diagnostics.
- SF6 consolidation and reclamation.
