Development in the resource and industrial sectors is expected to cause a 4.4% per year increase in electricity demand in the Central and North Queensland region—including Gladstone and Rockhampton—over the next five years. To meet this demand, a new 275kV transmission line is proposed between the Calvale and Stanwell substations. The line is expected to be located mostly on existing easements beside an existing 275kV line that runs between Calvale and Stanwell.
Powerlink has received Ministerial designation for the project and commenced construction during October 2011.
In 2009, Powerlink appointed specialist environmental consultant GHD to undertake an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project. The EIA was completed in early 2011 following the release of the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) which included an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) to guide construction activities. The EIS can be downloaded from the Environmental documents page.
