The Blackwall Substation near the Mt Crosby Water Treatment Plant plays, and will continue to play, an important long-term role in maintaining a reliable supply of high voltage electricity to South East Queensland (SEQ). To meet SEQ’s future electricity needs, the capability of the substation will need to be progressively expanded in the coming years by installing additional substation equipment.
To cater for this long term need, Powerlink acquired three adjoining land parcels between 1978 and 1984 (well before any residential development in the area). Substation equipment has been installed on one portion of land, and the capability of the substation will need to be progressively expanded in the coming years by installing additional substation equipment on the remaining two land parcels. The existing substation comprises 275kV switching equipment. Additional 275kV equipment at the substation will need to be added around 2014 to accommodate a new transmission line from Springdale (near Gatton), which will enter the substation at its north-west corner (well away from existing residences). It is also expected 500kV equipment will be required around 2020. Powerlink will seek to locate this future equipment as far away from existing residents as possible.
Before any expansion work is undertaken, an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) will be produced in consultation with nearby neighbours and other stakeholders, which involves assessing potential environmental impacts and developing appropriate management and mitigation measures.
