To meet increasing electricity demand in Southern Queensland, which is being driven by commercial, industrial and residential use, Powerlink needs to build a 500kV transmission line between the existing Springdale Substation site (about 9km north of Gatton) and the Halys Substation site (about 22km west of Tarong Power Station). As part of future planning to meet this demand, Powerlink acquired an easement for this new transmission line, and a second line when required in the future to meet longer-term electricity needs in the region. This project has been identified in the South East Queensland Infrastructure Plan and Program (SEQIPP) since 2005.

On-ground work is being undertaken to mark out the proposed location of the transmission towers required for the initial transmission line. Following this, we will meet with landowners to discuss the future construction program plans. Construction is anticipated to commence in 2012/13 and is expected to be complete by late 2015.
Powerlink commenced community consultation for the project in November 1999 to acquire a strategic easement in advance of the need to construct the lines and to provide land use certainty for the community into the future. Powerlink appointed a specialist environmental consultant to undertake the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project. In January 2001, a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was released for public comment and was later updated in 2007 to include the outcomes of further studies, legislative changes, and planning requirements. This document can be downloaded from the Environmental documents page.
