The new Western Downs Substation is located at Brigalow, near the Kogan Creek Power Station.
The substation is the first stage of a broader project needed to ensure a reliable supply of high voltage electricity is maintained to Southern Queensland.
Read more about the second stage, known as Western Downs to Halys.
This project is now complete.
In 2009, Powerlink appointed specialist environmental consultant RPS (formerly Conics) to undertake an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project (including both stage one and stage two). As part of the EIA, RPS prepared an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), following input from the community and other stakeholders.
The Final EIS was published in November 2010 and included an Environmental Management Plan to guide construction activities. This document can be downloaded from the Environmental documents page.
Construction of the substation was completed during August 2011.
