Construction of the new Tully to Innisfail transmission line was completed in August 2008.
This new transmission line will deliver a more secure, safe and reliable high voltage electricity supply to the communities of Innisfail, El Arish and Mission Beach. In the longer term, it will ensure the future high voltage electricity supply to Cairns and Far North Queensland.
Powerlink and our construction management team would like to thank property owners and the local community for their cooperation during construction of this important infrastructure.
In late 2009, Powerlink completed works to remove the aged Kareeya to Innisfail transmission line, which was replaced by the new Tully to Innisfail transmission line.

Background
In 2003, an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) prepared by environmental consultants C&B Group investigated two options to upgrade supply to Far North Queensland:
The final EIS for both these options was completed in 2003 and is available in the table below. The EIS was also lodged in the Cardwell and Johnstone Shire Councils libraries and with relevant government agencies.
Powerlink was required to refer the EIS to the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA) in December 2003 under the Environmental Protection and Diversity Conservation Act 1999.
In 2005, DEWHA approved the replacement of transmission line along the coastal alignment between Tully and Innisfail. Further information about the decision and conditions attached to the approval is available from the DEWHA website.
To meet the Commonwealth’s conditions of approval, Powerlink undertook investigations and field studies relating to matters of National Environmental Significance. These studies were completed by environmental consultants in March 2006, when the draft Report on the Findings of Targeted Surveys for National Environmental Significance Matters and the draft Environmental Management Plan were released for public comment.
Following public consultation, we forwarded these documents to DEWHA on 9 June 2006 for final approval, which was provided on 28 July 2006.
