Strathmore to Bowen
Powerlink’s new Strathmore to Bowen 132kV transmission line and substation will help ensure a ensure a continued reliable supply of electricity to the growing Bowen region including the expansion of the Abbot Point coal terminal, ongoing residential and commercial growth and future industrial development.
The project will provide a new source of high voltage electricity to the Bowen region by transmitting power from Powerlink’s high voltage grid at Strathmore substation, near Collinsville, to the new Bowen North substation alongside Ergon’s Merinda substation.
The new line is expected to be completed by summer 2010/2011. Provision is also being made along part of the alignment for a 275kV line should it be required in the future.
Status
The construction of the new line is nearing completion and is on target to be commissioned by summer 2010/2011.
By way of background, an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the project was issued in October 2007 followed by Ministerial designation of approximately 85% of the alignment. Further refinements were identified at both the northern and southern sections of the transmission line. Powerlink engaged Natural Solutions Environmental Consultants Pty Ltd to prepare a revised Draft EIS for the project.
This document included an assessment of the realigned sections and the substation site at Merinda. The Draft EIS examined the environmental, community and economic impacts of the project.
