Overview

The Wambo Wind Farm is a renewable energy development located near Jandowae, in the Western Downs region of Queensland, a site chosen for its excellent wind resources and grid connectivity. The Wambo Wind Farm is being constructed as a joint venture between Stanwell and Cubico Sustainable Investments (Cubico).

Construction of stage one commenced in June 2023 and will generate 252MW of clean energy through 42 turbines, with completion of stage one is scheduled for 2025. Stage two will commence in 2024 and will add a further 41 turbines to generate 254MW, boosting the total generation to more than 500MW by early 2026, enough to power 312,000 homes annually.

Status

Powerlink has been engaged by Stanwell and Cubico to connect the wind farm to the transmission network. This will require construction of a double circuit 275kV transmission line between a proposed substation at Diamondy on the Wambo Wind Farm site tracking east for approximately 47 kilometres and connecting into Powerlink’s existing Halys Substation (located 11km south-east of Kumbia township).

In August 2023, Powerlink received Ministerial Infrastructure Designation (MID) approval for the project. A copy of the MID Proposal, Draft Corridor Selection Report (CSR) and Final CSR are available on this webpage, providing information on the corridor and easement alignment selection process. Initial construction activities commenced in April 2023, which include preparing site access roads and gate installation. Removal of the existing decommissioned transmission towers and line are also progressing and were completed in January 2024.

Works for the new Diamondy Substation have commenced along with tower assembly which will be followed by stringing activities. Project completion and line energisation are expected to be finalised in late 2024, subject to weather and site conditions.

Get involved

We are committed to ongoing genuine and timely engagement with landholders, local communities and other stakeholders to support development and delivery of renewable energy projects.

In late 2023 Powerlink, alongside Stanwell and Cubico Sustainable Investments hosted numerous information sessions in Kingaroy and Jandowae. These sessions provided a great opportunity for us to meet local residents and landholders seeking to learn more about our activities, projects and future plans.

Wambo Community Engagement

Please join Powerlink, Stanwell, Cubico and Vetas at our community coffee catch up in Jandowae, where you can meet some of our team members and learn more about this project.

Venue and location: Wombats Café and Grill, 48 High Street, Jandowae

Date: 16 May and 23 August 2024

Time: 8am to 11am

Powerlink’s community investment activities are aimed at supporting initiatives and projects that focus on creating sustainable communities, assist with economic development, enhance social capacity, build resilience and create positive legacies.

Alongside Stanwell, Vestas and Cubico Sustainable Investments, we were excited to co-sponsor Taralga Retirement Village’s new van to transport their residents and National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) clients to medical, allied health and community access services in Jandowae, Dalby and much further afield as required.

Taralga Retirement Village Van Wambo

The van will also be used for social outings contributing to the happiness and wellbeing of residents, their families and carers. Strong social connections are so important to maintain later in life to foster a sense of community and belonging and Powerlink was pleased to support this activity.
