TransGrid and Powerlink have conducted several joint planning investigations around if, or when, an upgrade to the Queensland/New South Wales Interconnector (QNI) would be economically justified under the AER’s Regulatory Investment Test for Transmission (RIT-T).

TransGrid and Powerlink have conducted joint planning investigations about if and when an upgrade to the Queensland/New South Wales Interconnector (QNI) would be economically justified under the AER’s Regulatory Investment Test for Transmission (RIT-T).

The most recent studies concluded in November 2014 with the publication of a Project Assessment Conclusions Report (PACR) prepared and issued in accordance with the requirements of the National Electricity Rules.

The cost-benefit analysis contained in the PACR did identify a preferred credible option. Consequently, the PACR contained a final recommendation to ‘do nothing’ in relation to upgrading QNI power transfer capability at that time.

Powerlink and TransGrid continue to monitor QNI as part of regular joint planning processes and will take into account the latest available information as part of any future RIT-T assessment undertaken.

A copy of the PACR, submissions and earlier documents issued during the regulatory process, together with reports from previous investigations can be downloaded below.
