Powerlink is prepared for Tropical Cyclone Debbie which is expected to cross the North Queensland coast early tomorrow (Tuesday) morning.
Chief Executive Merryn York said Powerlink was closely monitoring Tropical Cyclone Debbie’s development and movement across the North Queensland region.
“We have several transmission lines and substations providing high voltage electricity supply in those areas and as such we’re carefully tracking the cyclone’s intensity and path,” Ms York said.
“Powerlink is experienced and trained in preparing, managing and responding to the effects of a natural disaster on our network, and we have effective emergency processes and procedures in place to guide our response.
“If the cyclone does affect high voltage power supply, we will be deploying emergency crews to the site as quickly and safely as possible to assess the damage and commence restoration efforts.
“It is important to note that identifying and repairing cyclone damage to high voltage infrastructure can be challenging in adverse weather and ground conditions and can take some time depending on the extent of damage.
“As an essential service provider, we understand the importance of maintaining and restoring bulk electricity supply as quickly and safely as possible.
“Once the cyclone has passed, if members of the community notice any damage to high voltage transmission lines they should stay well clear and immediately report them to 000 and Powerlink’s emergency number 1800 353 031.”
Powerlink will keep the community informed on our website, Facebook (#PowerlinkQld) and Twitter (@powerlinkqld) accounts as the situation develops and the impact of the cyclone is better understood.
