Evolving the way we operate our transmission network

The Next Generation Network Operations (NGNO) Portfolio is evolving the way we operate our network, improving Queensland's transmission network performance to better adapt to changes in the energy environment.

Through the application of contemporary technologies, NGNO is changing the way we work, streamlining routine tasks, enhancing automation and advancing our network operations. Its impact reaches every corner of Powerlink - from the customer experience to strengthening behind-the-scenes systems that keep our network running reliably and efficiently.

Project overview

The NGNO Portfolio consists of three programs:

The Powerlink Energy Management System is the principal technology platform for the safe and efficient real-time operation of the transmission network. The replacement of the Energy Management System is a critical step in meeting the challenges of the changing electricity environment.

The AEMS will offer contemporary features that will evolve how we operate our network.

The AEMS Program will deliver:

  • a new system with contemporary functionality to control and operate the network
  • advances in capabilities to forecast and predict network contingencies
  • enhanced end-to-end visibility of operational network information
  • reduction in manual data entry across systems.

The Enabling Software Program will focus on contemporary operational network performance by replacing outdated or incompatible tools, streamlining processes, and strengthening collaboration to:

  • manage and investigate network incidents delivering an enterprise-wide view of current and emerging incidents
  • schedule and manage planned network outages using intuitive network models
  • new essential interfaces between AEMS and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) master data
  • automated data controls reducing manual data entry across systems.

The Foundations Program will deliver the pre-requisite infrastructure and work environments to support the AEMS to:

  • provide collaborative, ergonomic, and safe workspaces that prioritize employee well-being
  • establish a dedicated Test Lab for evaluating new operational technologies and an AEMS Training Facility
  • update business continuity sites to improve network resilience and reduce operational risks.
