A $7 million investment in Powerlink Queensland’s transmission network is set to improve network performance and ensure the safe, reliable and cost effective supply of high voltage electricity across Brisbane’s southern suburbs.
The project involves refitting 24 transmission towers along the 7.5 kilometre Runcorn to Belmont line, which is part of the high voltage electricity network supplying Brisbane’s southside.
Powerlink Chief Executive Merryn York said the project would support more than 20 jobs and extend the service life of the transmission line well into the future.
“Powerlink plays an important role in powering the Queensland economy, being responsible for the reliable supply of high voltage electricity to homes and businesses across the state,” Ms York said.
“The Runcorn to Belmont transmission line was built in 1971 and condition assessments completed late last year identified a number of components that need to be refitted.
“Our specialist crews will focus on strengthening tower foundations, replacing corroded bolts and steelwork, cleaning and painting towers, and restoring anti-climbing barriers.
“These targeted maintenance works are the most cost efficient solution to meet Powerlink’s ongoing network reliability requirements in this part of Brisbane.”
Ms York said on-ground construction activities were expected to commence in late July, with project completion anticipated by November 2016 (weather permitting).
“The commencement of this work will follow the completion of a similar refit project currently underway along the 4.5 kilometre Algester to Runcorn transmission line, which is expected to be completed in mid July,” she said.
“We are committed to safe work practices and working closely with residents to minimise any potential impacts on properties.”
