Helicopters equipped with special inspection equipment have been in the skies over Southern Queensland capturing video footage of some small but very important components on our towers.
The helicopters are fitted with a fully insulated platform from which a specialist linesman can carefully position a camera attached to a 5m insulating pole to record video of porcelain or glass insulator strings near the top of our towers.
The video footage recorded at selected towers is then reviewed to determine if any corrosion or contaminants can be found on the steel pins that join the insulator discs together.
This technique is a time and cost effective way to inspect this equipment, which ultimately plays an essential role in ensuring the continued safe and reliable operation of our transmission network.
