Fifty power industry experts from across Australia and New Zealand gathered at Virginia over the past two weeks for two CIGRE panel discussions.

CIGRE is a global organisation with more than 3200 members dedicated to improving performance and efficiency of electrical grids.

It also coordinates 16 dedicated study committees each with the objective of investigating potential design improvements for power systems.

Principal Engineer Protection, Bruce, is Powerlink’s representative on the Substation Protection and Automation committee, which also consists of representatives from utilities, vendors and consultants.

“It’s a privilege to represent Powerlink at this type of event. We learn so much from the experiences of others,” said Bruce.

“We were able to share our knowledge of IEC61850 secondary systems and learn about what others are doing with respect to renewable generation connections on the transmission system.”

In addition to this, Principal Engineer Major Plant & Diagnostics, Gary, is Powerlink’s representative on the Transformer committee, which convened this week to discuss the design, manufacturing, life management and testing for transformers.

Feedback from both meetings will be shared at CIGRE’s world forum in Auckland in September.
