Emily is a quiet, unassuming young woman who is intent on making her mark in electrical engineering.

The 21-year-old from Brisbane is undertaking a three-month vacation student placement at Powerlink and says the opportunity has been invaluable in providing her with a better understanding of how the whole electricity grid works.

“I’m really enjoying the opportunity to learn about Powerlink, the National Electricity Market and the grid across Queensland,” Emily said.

“At university we use scenarios but here we get to use real information and data and it’s on a much larger scale.

“It gives you a different perspective of the practical application of what you know in your head from what you’ve learnt at university,” she said. “When you see theory applied in operation it really clicks for you.”

Studying Electrical Engineering and specialising in Power and Energy Systems at QUT, Emily has one semester left until she graduates.

“One of the great things about doing the vacation placement here at Powerlink with the Network and Business Strategy team is that I’m being exposed to lots of different parts of the business.”

“It’s giving me a much better idea about what I might do when I finish my degree and is giving me an insight into how a business the size of Powerlink works together to deliver projects and manage such a big network,” Emily said.

“People here have so much knowledge and while there have been new concepts to learn and challenge me, everyone is happy to help and guide me so I’m learning a lot,” she said.
