Powerlink has thanked the Cairns community after critical maintenance work on an underground cable from Bayview Heights to White Rock nears completion.
The project involved the maintenance on the underground cable and revitalisation of a 2.7km long stretch of easement. Approximately 400 trees were removed along the easement after being identified as encroaching on the critical cable.
Replacing the trees with more suitable plantings along the easement is a key project deliverable. Upon completion, more than 24,000 grasses and shrubs that are locally propagated from local provenance seed and cuttings will be planted.
The first stage of planting works started in November 2024 and approximately 5,000 compatible species have been planted so far.
Acting General Manager of Infrastructure Delivery Kyle Worthing thanked the community for their understanding throughout the project.
“We understand this work was disruptive to local residents and recreational users around the Forest Gardens Estate,” he said.
“Powerlink engaged early with the local community and gained their feedback to help shape how this project was delivered.
“We have worked with local suppliers and Cairns Regional Council to replace the removed vegetation and have since seen new bird species introduced to the area.
“Over coming weeks, new amenities will be installed along the walking path – including water bubblers with dog bowls and bench seats – again based on feedback from the community."
Local resident Councillor Cathy Zeiger said feedback has been positive.
“Everyone does miss the trees that were removed, however the upkeep of the new plants has been amazing,” she said.
“I am relieved the outcome has not been as dramatic as I initially envisaged.
“Powerlink’s team has been amazing to deal with, working with and incorporating feedback from the community every step of the way.
“The upkeep of the vegetation works has been good to see and I feel good about the area when I walk through.”
Powerlink will continue work in the area over the next 12 months to ensure the new vegetation is established.
