Work is underway on the second stage of a $10 million project to refit a major transmission line supplying power to Rockhampton.

Member for Rockhampton Barry O’Rourke said the work to extend the technical service life of 37 Powerlink transmission towers between Egans Hill and Rockhampton would support up to 30 jobs.

“Our publicly-owned energy companies are investing in infrastructure and creating jobs as Queensland recovers from the global economic challenges that are following COVID-19,” he said.

“Because of Queensland’s strong health response, we have been able to action Queensland’s plan for economic recovery.

“Central to that plan is ensuring the ongoing safe and reliable operation of our transmission network into the future.

“Importantly, this project will support up to 30 jobs, with many flow on effects for Central Queensland businesses.”

Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said the 11 kilometre-long transmission line provides a critical supply of electricity to the Rockhampton area.

“Stage one activities took place between April and July, and involved initial works to replace ageing transmission line components such as insulators,” Dr Lynham said.

“The project’s second stage includes painting the transmission towers, replacing corroded bolts and steelwork, re-installing and upgrading earthing systems, and completing foundation strengthening works.

“Powerlink’s specialised crews are undertaking cleaning, surface preparation and hand painting works on 12 towers just north of the Fitzroy River.”

Some towers are located near homes, major roads, sporting fields and recreational facilities, so engagement with landholders and other stakeholders is vital.

At all times Powerlink’s crews aim to complete their work with as little disruption as possible.

The third and final stage of the project, involving remaining hardware replacement work, is expected to occur between April and July 2021, weather dependent.
