The release of the Queensland Energy Roadmap has highlighted the importance of Powerlink delivering vital reinforcement of the electricity transmission network in Central Queensland.

Gladstone Power Station has been a cornerstone of the power system in Central Queensland and reinforcement of the transmission network is required to ensure the security and reliability of supply to essential industry, businesses and households in the region, and across Queensland.

Powerlink has been planning for the potential closure of the Gladstone Power Station for many years, with early stages of transmission reinforcement work kicking off in 2024.

Executive General Manager Ian Lowry explained a critical part of the reinforcement work between Calvale and Calliope River is progressing.

“The timelines for transmission planning and delivery mean we need to be prepared and in delivery well ahead of potential generation closures,” he said.

“Reinforcing our network will mean additional high voltage powerlines, a new substation west of Gladstone and upgrades of other substations that service the region.

“Powerlink also has an obligation under the national rules to provide system strength.

“We are exploring options for the initial installation of up to four synchronous condensers at substations around Gladstone and across Central Queensland, to support the stability of the power system as older generation progressively retires.

“Work is underway to determine the best locations with public and community consultation to commence early next year.

“The Queensland Government’s recently released Energy Roadmap recognised the criticality of this work and Powerlink is focused on delivering.”

The transmission reinforcement works include new transmission lines between Calvale and Calliope River and between Bouldercombe and Larcom Creek.

Executive General Manager Ian Lowry said various approval processes are underway for this work.

“We are committed to early and ongoing engagement with communities and landholders,” he said.

“We recognise the impact of our work and are committed to sourcing local suppliers wherever possible, and identifying lasting community investment that supports the resilience of communities in the region.

“Our team will be in the area this week where landholders and community are welcome to drop in, provide feedback and ask questions.”

A new substation is proposed west of Gladstone, along the Bruce Highway south of Mt Alma Road at East End, as part of reinforcing the transmission network in Central Queensland.

Residents and landholders are invited to drop into the following sessions to meet the Powerlink team:

  • Wednesday, 22 October from 4pm to 7pm – Bajool Hall
  • Thursday, 23 October from 4pm to 7pm – Bouldercombe Sports and Recreation Complex
  • Friday, 24 October from 8am to 11am – Mount Larcom Bowls Club
