Overview
Powerlink has been engaged by Neoen to support the connection of its 285MW Western Downs Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Stage 3 located at the Western Downs Green Power Hub, south-east of Chinchilla.
Powerlink’s scope of work focuses on leveraging existing connection infrastructure at Powerlink’s Western Downs Substation, including upgrades to the transmission network to accommodate the increased capacity.
Status
Design is underway, with construction scheduled to begin mid-2026 and commissioning expected by Q1 2027.
Once complete, total capacity of the BESS will reach more than 600MW, strengthening system performance by improving firming, flexibility, and reliability as more generation connects in the region.
