Powerlink was engaged by Stanwell and Cubico to connect Wambo Wind Farm, located near Jandowae, to the transmission network.
The Wambo Wind Farm Connection Project involved the construction of a double circuit 275kV transmission line between a substation at Diamondy on the Wambo Wind Farm site tracking east for approximately 47 kilometres and connecting into Powerlink’s existing Halys Substation (located 11km south-east of Kumbia township).
Wambo Wind Farm is located in the Western Downs region of Queensland, a site chosen for its excellent wind resources and grid connectivity. The wind farm was developed as a joint venture between Stanwell and Cubico Sustainable Investments (Cubico).
Construction of stage one commenced in June 2023 and was completed in 2025, delivering 252MW of clean energy generated by 42 turbines.
Stage two commenced in 2024 and will add a further 41 turbines and 254MW of capacity, boosting the total generation to more than 500MW by the end of 2026. This is enough renewable energy to power 312,000 homes annually.
Visit wambowindfarm.com.au for more project information.
Powerlink commenced construction to connect stage one of the wind farm to the transmission network in early 2023, with works completed in late 2024.
To support stage two of the wind farm, Powerlink commenced an expansion of the Diamondy Substation to facilitate an additional 250MW of renewable energy into the transmission network, with works completed in March 2026.
In 2023 and 2024 Powerlink, alongside Stanwell and Cubico Sustainable Investments hosted numerous information sessions in Kingaroy and Jandowae. These sessions provided a great opportunity for us to meet local residents and landholders seeking to learn more about our activities, projects and future plans.
Powerlink’s community investment activities are aimed at supporting initiatives and projects that focus on creating sustainable communities, assist with economic development, enhance social capacity, build resilience and create positive legacies.
Alongside Stanwell, Vestas and Cubico Sustainable Investments, we were excited to co-sponsor Taralga Retirement Village’s new van to transport their residents and National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) clients to medical, allied health and community access services in Jandowae, Dalby and much further afield as required.
The van will also be used for social outings contributing to the happiness and wellbeing of residents, their families and carers. Strong social connections are so important to maintain later in life to foster a sense of community and belonging and Powerlink was pleased to support this activity.
